Senior Vice President, Wealth and Advice
With over 25 years of experience in the Canadian credit union system, Michael Atkinson is responsible for the oversight and delivery of advice in the credit union and the strategic direction and operations of the Wealth Management team, including the financial planning, investment and insurance business lines.
Michael has a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Science in Economic Policy, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is a Financial Management Advisor (FMA) and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). In his off hours, Michael teaches microeconomics and macroeconomics at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Prior to joining G&F, Michael was with Vancity for 18 years, working in various branch positions before moving to Wealth Management in 2002 as the Director, Sustainable Wealth Management where he was responsible for a team of 80.
Michael specializes in strategic planning and analysis; wealth management; member service; financial planning; economic policy; and financial regulation. He sits on G&F’s Executive and Leadership teams where he advises on strategy and direction for the credit union, wealth management and offering insight and analysis on changes in the Canadian economy. Michael also provides investment regulatory oversight as a compliance manager and manages a team of wealth management professionals. He is known as being a high-energy, influential coach and mentor.
Since joining G&F in 2012, Michael has helped grow the presence of wealth management providing more members advice, protection and investments. Under Michael’s leadership, his team has more than doubled their assets under administration and has grown to 15 wealth professionals. Their primary objective: providing unbiased advice putting the members’ best interests first.

Michael is on the Board of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation and a Member of the Board of Gulf and Fraser Insurance Services Ltd.Michael was a recipient of the National Young Leader Award from Credit Union Central of Canada and a former participant in the Filene Research Institute i3 (Ideas, Innovation, Implementation), focused on delivering solutions for North American Credit Unions. He is a member of the National Credit Union Community Impact Committee, which provides a direction and planning regarding credit union social responsibility initiatives and events.
