Lewis Buble

Name: Lewis Bublé

President and Chairman

Following a course charted by his family, Lewis still remains active in the fishing industry as well as in the business and sporting communities. He is V.P. of the Board of Pacific Coast Fishermen’s Mutual Marine Insurance Company, was a Parks Canada’s Pacific Advisor for the Creation of National Marine Conservation Areas, and was re-appointed to the Pacific Region Advisory Council on Marine Oil Spill Response and Preparedness. He is also a Co-Owner of the Vancouver Giants WHL Hockey Team, and operates Winning Edge Management Inc.

Lewis and his wife Amber have lived in Burnaby for over 40 years, where they raised their three children; daughters/moms Brandee and Crystal, and son/singer/father Michael - who recently gave them their sixth grandchild. Lewis is a lifelong member of G&F, having served on the Board of Directors for over 20 years. His experience has provided him with the opportunity to appreciate members’ needs while building on what has made G&F such a valued and solid contributor in the communities we proudly serve.

Howard Normann

Howard Normann

First Vice President

As a member of G&F Financial Group since 1979, Howard is a firm believer in the credit union's philosophy of “life beyond banking”. Howard is currently serving as the First Vice-President of the Board of Directors. He has served on most Board committees including the Investment and Lending, Conduct Review, Governance and G&F Financial Group Foundation.

Howard has been employed by the City of Vancouver/Vancouver Park Board for over 36 years and has been responsible for overseeing its city-wide Golf Course operations, acted as the Director of the Van Dusen Botanical Garden/Bloedel Conservatory and, currently, he is the Director of Parks.

Howard firmly believes that good corporate governance is the foundation of a successful organization and that the Board of Directors must continue to be accountable to the membership by showing strong leadership and solid business judgement.

Howard believes in supporting the communities in which we live and work though community involvement. He is proud of the credit union's involvement and looks forward to continuing G&F's reinvestment in the community.

Sonia Virk
Served on the Board since: 2014

Sonia Virk

Second Vice President

Sonia obtained her B.A. (Laws) and LL.B. degrees from Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab, India. After which she emigrated to Canada and attended the University of New Brunswick where she obtained her second LL.B. degree.

Having completed her law degree, Sonia moved to British Columbia where she articled with the law firm of Yearwood & Company and was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2005. In April 2008, she co-founded the law firm of Joomratty & Virk. In September 2012, she co-founded Virk Viyas & Associate Lawyers. Sonia specializes in Corporate/Commercial Law, Residential and Commercial real estate and Wills & Estates.

Sonia is very active in the community and donates her time to various community related events. In 2007, she was elected President of the Indo Canadian Business Association of British Columbia. She was the youngest and the first woman to be elected President. She is a member of the Surrey Board of Trade and was a member of their Business Excellence Awards committee for many years. She was also a member of British Columbia's Small Business Roundtable. She currently sits on the Board of Directors of the College of Dieticians of British Columbia as a public representative.

As your Director, Sonia brings her legal knowledge and business experience to this position. She is a young professional woman with close ties to the business community. At G&F, the member counts first. She believes in that philosophy.

Joe Boroevich
Served on the Board since: 1985

Joe Boroevich

Director

A member of G&F Financial Group since 1958, Joe has served on 8 committees in addition to acting as First-Vice Chair during his tenure on the Board.

Born and raised in Burnaby, Joe has been a commercial fisherman since 1959 and is the previous owner and captain of the M/V Ante B, named after his late father, Ante (Tony) Boroevich, a former member and Director of G&F Financial Group.

Joe has been an instrumental part of G&F Financial Group and has been a participant of the G&F Financial Group Foundation, which provides financial support to charities and social causes in the communities served by the credit union.

During his tenure on the Board, Joe has contributed to numerous decisions that G&F Financial Group has undertaken towards being a solid financial institution. As a Director, Joe is committed to maintaining G&F Financial Group’s high standards. He values member input into how the credit union can continue to meet their growing needs and remain a strong player in the financial industry.

Villa Nova Carvalho
Served on the Board since: 1997

Vila Nova Carvalho

Director

Vila Nova has lived in Richmond since he first came to Canada. Vila Nova obtained his Degree of Barrister-at-Law in London, England, and a Masters of Law Degree from the University of Dar-es-Saalam, Tanzania, where he worked in the legal profession. He has also served as Solicitor at BC Hydro, in Vancouver and speaks four languages.

A member of the credit union since 1987, Vila Nova strongly believes in the credit union movement. He has served on various Board committees at G&F Financial Group and has a strong sense of community.

Vila Nova is also an active member of his church and has served in his Parish in many capacities. In addition, he belongs to numerous Boards of Directors in the corporate field, and served on the Richmond General Hospital Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1992 of which he was Chairman for two years. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Richmond Multi-Cultural Concerns Society for 10 years and was on the Board of the Vancouver Community College and the College of Occupational Therapists.

Christine Dacre

Director

Christine is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 15 years in executive and senior level financial positions. She has significant experience in finance, strategic planning, corporate leadership, risk management, internal controls, human resource processes and information technology. She is a resident in New Westminster, with an interest in the community. She was on the board of the New Westminster Victims Assistance Association from 2009-2014 and is currently on the board of the New Westminster Police Department.

Christine is very familiar with G&F Financial Group and the credit union system as she was a previous board member from 1992 to 2007. Her belief is that the credit union is a part of the community it serves. It is about its members and the friendly, professional staff who work hard to meet their needs.

Governance, oversight, and cooperative values are important to Christine.

Ian Daniel

Director

Ian Daniel has been a member of G&F Financial Group and its predecessor organizations, including ELCO Credit Union, for over forty years. Ian’s training in electrical engineering technology gave him opportunities to experience and work in several countries in the Middle-East, India and South America, as well as over 22 years in serving with BC Hydro.

With the dawn of the internet age, Ian left the power company to form his consulting and internet development practice. New Creation Consulting and NCOL Internet is now in its 20th incorporated year, serving clients across North America, with high-end technology services for clients in major industries.

Ian formed and leads a technology-based non-profit, serving the technology needs of charities, including kids camps, bringing a business-class of IT expertise to the non-profit sector. Ian is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Entrepreneurial Leaders Organization, which seeks to encourage and empower entrepreneurs to find and follow their calling through the challenges of business.

As the interconnected financial services industry undergoes significant change, priorities will refocus, from “mobile friendly” to “mobile first.” Ian is drawn to offer his services on the G&F Financial Group Board, through counsel regarding technology issues, business acumen and insight into the industry.

Ian is married to Kathy. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Brian Hamaguchi

Brian Hamaguchi

Director

Brian thanks you for 33 years of rewarding service. Born in Kamloops 66 years ago, Brian has been a resident of North Burnaby since 1955. After graduating from North Burnaby High School, Brian attended UBC for four years in pre-dentistry. Brian has spent 50 years as a shore worker at Canfisco, where he has experience as a foreman, charge hand, shop steward, forklift operator, first aid attendant, safety committee member as well as serving on the union negotiating committees. Brian serves on the Fisherman's Union board as the trustee on the Union benefit fund, and has also served as a Union trustee for many years. He holds a position on his strata council and was past president for many years.

Coming from humble beginnings and a middle class upbringing, Brian feels he brings a unique perspective to the Board from a blue collar viewpoint. He brings much experience to the credit union having served on all committees as well as holding Chair and executive positions. This he feels lets him make prudent decisions on behalf of membership. He is a keen proponent of high quality member service and promises to continue to endorse improvements and innovations within the credit union.

Bill Nohr
Served on the Board since: 2011

Bill Nohr

Director

Bill was born and raised in Vancouver and has been a proud member of the credit union since 1979. He spent 25 years involved in Senior Management with Volvo Penta Canada, the marine division of AB Volvo. His responsibilities included the design and implementation of sales and marketing programs and managing corporate budgets. Bill has held leadership roles in the non-profit sector in the areas of direct service and fundraising and is currently active in volunteering his time for community service.

Since his election to the Board in 2011, Bill is extremely proud of the growth and success G&F Financial Group has experienced and believes this growth is attributable to the strong leadership and vision of our Co-CEOs and Executive Team, and the dedication, hard work and engagement of our staff. While on the Board, he has served multiple times on most G&F Board Committees.

Bill is particularly proud of G&F's involvement in our members' communities. It shows the care we have for our members and illustrates our commitment to the cooperative principles.

Bill resides in Langley, BC and is a proud father (two children) and grandfather (two grandchildren).

Jennifer Phipps

Director

Jennifer was born and raised in Burnaby, attended the University of British Columbia graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce. Jennifer articled with an international chartered accounting firm in Vancouver, providing audit and assurance services to public and private corporations. After obtaining her designation, Jennifer worked at a large international public company managing an accounting department working closely with executive management on internal and external financial reporting. Jennifer then decided to return to public practice, to focus on providing accounting and advisory services to private corporations and owner managed businesses. Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in the accounting profession.

Jennifer is currently a director and owner of Leed Advisors Inc., Chartered Professional Accountants. The firm provides accounting, audit, and tax consulting services to private and public corporations, and individuals. In 2014, the firm was recognized by the Surrey Board of Trade with an award for Corporate Social Responsibility. This recognition was earned due to the firm's contributions to the community through volunteer service and commitment to professional training of local university students. As a Director, Jennifer would bring her accounting, auditing, tax and general business knowledge to the position. Jennifer's strong financial background would assist the Board in the oversight role required by regulations.

Jennifer has strong communication skills and believes that teamwork produces great results. She has spent many years providing personalized professional services to her clients and appreciates the importance of meeting the personal needs of members, investing in employee development and embracing technological change.

Lee Varseveld

Director

Lee first became a member of G&F Financial Group in the 1980s as a salmon and herring fisherman. Since fishing, Lee has enjoyed a 25 year career in the marine insurance industry as an employee of Pacific Coast Fishermen’s Mutual Marine Insurance Company – a membership driven Mutual. Lee is a Chartered Insurance Professional and currently serves as General Manager of the company reporting to its Board of Directors.

Since joining G&F's Board in 2014, Lee has served on a number of committees and has found the experience exciting and rewarding. Witnessing the recent unprecedented growth for G&F and participating in the rapid and fundamental change faced by credit unions and the greater financial institution community have been highlights of the experience.

Lee is enthused about continuing his contribution to G&F Financial Group's goal of helping its members, employees and community achieve a life beyond banking.

Floyd Yamamoto
Served on the Board since: 2007

Floyd Yamamoto

Director

As a director of G&F Financial Group, Floyd continues to support the credit union's goals in providing exceptional service and benefits to it's members and supports our local communities through many worthy causes throughout the lower mainland, including schools, community associations, Richmond Hospital Foundation, BC Children's Hospital, Burnaby Hospital Foundation, and the United Way.

Floyd believes that one of the most important keys to success for G&F are their employees and he is proud that G&F is recognized as one of BC's Top Employers.

Floyd has been a member of the credit union for over 25 years and is now in his fourth term as a member of G&F's Board of Directors. Floyd has served as chair of the Compensation and HR, Investment and Lending, Marketing and Election Committees.

Floyd has a solid understanding of the credit union system, board governance and information technology, through working for G&F, Stabilization Central Credit Union (the internal regulator for credit unions in British Columbia) and over 20 years of experience in the IT industry.

Floyd and his wife Sheila are longtime Steveston residents and are active in the community, volunteering with diverse organizations such as the Nikkei Fishermen's Reunion Project, RCMP Multi-Cultural Advisory Committee and Steveston's Santa Claus parade.
